The little-known story of Ukrainian children torn from their homes in the crush between the Nazi and Soviet fronts in World War II. Spending their childhood as refugees in Europe, these inspiring individuals later immigrated to the United States, creating new homes and communities through their grit, faith and deep belief in the importance of preserving culture.

I’ve become a real believer in the importance of memoirs, eyewitness accounts, etc. as supplements to archival historical work. Moreover, Ukrainians lack extensive memoir literature, especially by ordinary folk...Unsurprisingly, when it comes to their history, non-Ukrainian voices tend to define it, rather than Ukrainian ones. Matej’s project struck me as helping provide Ukrainians with a greater historical voice and correcting this imbalance.
— Dr. Alexander Motyl, Prof., Political Science, Rutgers University, as quoted in the Kyiv Post, May 12, 2020
